Bill overview
This bill, the Expanded Coverage for Former Foster Youth Act, aims to extend health insurance coverage to former foster youth in the United States. Currently, states must provide coverage until age 26 for those in foster care at 18 who were enrolled in Medicaid. This legislation expands that coverage to include former foster youth placed in legal guardianship with a kinship caregiver or those who were emancipated from foster care before age 18, and removes the requirement that they previously been enrolled in Medicaid. It also mandates states to create outreach programs to help these individuals enroll in Medicaid.
