Bill overview
The Helping Tobacco Users Quit Act amends the Social Security Act to expand Medicaid and CHIP coverage for tobacco cessation services. Specifically, it requires these programs to cover counseling, pharmacotherapy (including prescription and non-prescription drugs), and diagnostic services provided under medical supervision. The bill also provides a temporary 90% federal matching rate for these services and mandates outreach campaigns to increase awareness of these resources. It extends these provisions to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
