Bill overview
The Public Safety First Act changes how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) handles non-U.S. citizens arrested for certain theft-related crimes. Specifically, if an unlawfully present alien is arrested for burglary, theft, larceny, shoplifting, or assault on a law enforcement officer, and is charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or admits to committing these crimes, DHS is required to detain them. This aims to prevent individuals with a history of criminal activity from remaining in the United States while legal proceedings are ongoing. The bill clarifies the definition of relevant crimes and mandates DHS to issue detainer notices for these individuals.
