Bill overview
The Belt and Road Oversight Act establishes a new position, the Country China Officer, within the State Department to monitor Chinese investment and projects around the world. This officer will report on Chinese activity, including debt obligations and infrastructure projects, and provide regular reports to Congress. The bill also requires embassies to assess the impact of these projects on a country’s economy and sovereignty and mandates the development of a strategy to counter Chinese influence.
