Bill overview
The I-VETS Act requires the Department of Homeland Security to track information about immigrants who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. When an immigrant applies for an immigration benefit or faces immigration enforcement, the Secretary must determine if they served in the military. The bill mandates that Homeland Security records be updated to reflect military service and creates a system to monitor the outcomes for these veterans. Importantly, the information gathered cannot be used to justify deportation or removal from the United States.
