Bill overview
The Election Mail Act aims to improve the delivery and processing of mail-in ballots for federal elections. It requires the U.S. Postal Service to process ballots the same day they are received, postmark each ballot, and carry them as first-class mail. The bill also mandates that states provide ballots with intelligent mail barcodes, establishes a uniform deadline for accepting mailed ballots, and requires election officials to count ballots postmarked by election day and received within seven days. Finally, it prohibits operational changes that could hinder election mail delivery in the 120 days leading up to a federal election and requires annual consultation with Indian Tribes regarding voting barriers.
