Bill overview
This bill, the Restoring the Armed Career Criminal Act, amends the Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA) to broaden the definition of ‘prior convictions’ used to determine enhanced sentencing. It replaces the current definitions of ‘serious drug offense’ and ‘violent felony’ with a new category of ‘serious felony convictions,’ which includes any felony punishable by 10 years or more, or a combination of felonies resulting in a total prison term of 10 years or more. Individuals with three or more serious felony convictions will face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison for certain firearm offenses. This change aims to clarify and expand the scope of offenses considered when calculating prior convictions under the ACCA.
