Bill overview
This bill, titled the ‘Retiring the Egregious Confusion Over the Genuine Name of Israel’s Zone of Influence by Necessitating Government-use of Judea and Samaria Act,’ aims to standardize the U.S. government’s terminology regarding a region annexed by Israel from Jordan in 1967. Specifically, the bill prohibits the use of federal funds to create materials referring to this area as the ‘West Bank,’ while encouraging the use of ‘Judea and Samaria.’ It also mandates this change in numerous existing laws and resolutions.
Key provisions
- Prohibits the use of federal funds to create materials referring to the area as ‘West Bank.’
- Directs the U.S. government to refer to the region as ‘Judea and Samaria.’
- Requires the Secretary of State to waive the prohibition only with Congressional approval and a detailed explanation.
- Amends the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 to replace ‘West Bank’ with ‘Judea and Samaria.’
- Amends the Taylor Force Act to replace ‘West Bank’ with ‘Judea and Samaria.’
- Amends the Multinational Force and Observers Participation Resolution to replace ‘West Bank’ with ‘Judea and Samaria.’
- Amends several other laws and resolutions, including the Omnibus Diplomatic Security and Antiterrorism Act of 1986, the United States-Israel Free Trade Area Implementation Act of 1985, the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, and the Nita M. Lowey Middle East Partnership for Peace Act, to replace ‘West Bank’ with ‘Judea and Samaria.’
