Bill overview
This bill aims to improve how Medicare pays for ultralightweight manual wheelchairs. It requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to create specific billing codes to accurately reflect the different materials used in the wheelchair’s base, particularly those made with titanium or carbon fiber. Suppliers will receive standard Medicare payments, but can also charge beneficiaries the difference between the payment and their actual cost. The bill also mandates suppliers to inform beneficiaries about potential out-of-pocket expenses.
