Bill overview
The Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025 seeks to hold the Nigerian government accountable for religious freedom violations. It requires the Secretary of State to report on Nigerian officials involved in enforcing or tolerating blasphemy laws and to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. The bill also authorizes sanctions against identified Nigerian officials and designates Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa as Entities of Particular Concern. A waiver provision allows for the removal of these designations if certain conditions are met regarding enforcement of blasphemy laws and the entities' operations in Nigeria.
