Bill overview
The Bureau of Prisons Security Check and Action against Narcotics in Mail Act, or BOP SCAN Mail Act, requires the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Director to develop and implement a strategy to prevent fentanyl and other synthetic drugs from entering federal prisons through the mail. This bill stems from increasing concerns about drug overdoses and the use of mail to deliver dangerous substances, and builds on a successful pilot program. The goal is to enhance security, protect staff and inmates, and reduce the burden on correctional facility employees.
