Bill overview
The Stop Medical Profiteering and Theft Act (SMPTA) aims to prevent health care entities from entering into agreements to sell or lease real estate to real estate investment trusts if those terms could lead to financial instability or harm public health. The bill requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to review such agreements and consult with state attorneys general. States can also enforce the law, and the Department of Health and Human Services can impose civil penalties for violations. Additionally, the bill modifies tax code provisions related to rental income from qualified health care property.
