Bill overview
The Legacy Mine Cleanup Act of 2025 establishes a new office within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) focused on addressing contamination from past hardrock mining across mountainous, desert, and plains regions. This office will coordinate cleanup efforts, develop best practices, and prioritize cleanup sites, particularly those in Indian country and on the Navajo Nation. It also aims to improve processes for site assessments and encourage collaboration between federal agencies, states, tribes, and other stakeholders to remediate these sites and protect human health and the environment.
