Bill overview
The Protect Adoptees and American Families Act (PAAF Act) amends immigration law to automatically grant U.S. citizenship to internationally adopted children whose parents are U.S. citizens. Specifically, it expands the criteria for automatic citizenship to include children adopted before age 18 who lived in the legal custody of their U.S. citizen parent in the United States and who did not previously obtain citizenship. The bill also addresses the process for internationally adopted individuals residing outside the U.S. to become citizens, including a streamlined admission process and a criminal background check requirement.
