Bill overview
The Military in Law Enforcement Accountability Act restricts the ability of the Department of Defense and other federal law enforcement agencies to provide support to civilian law enforcement. It requires a presidential justification and congressional approval for such assistance, limited to specific emergencies like humanitarian crises, natural disasters, public health emergencies, or attacks on critical infrastructure. The bill also prohibits military personnel from simultaneously serving in both the Armed Forces and civilian law enforcement roles outside of the Department of Defense, and strengthens requirements for military assistance to civil authorities. Finally, it establishes a private right of action for those harmed by violations of the Act.
