Bill overview
The Deterring External Threats and Ensuring Robust Responses to Egregious and Nefarious Criminal Endeavors Act, or DETERRENCE Act, increases penalties for federal crimes when those crimes are linked to foreign governments. Specifically, it adds sentencing enhancements for kidnapping, murder-for-hire, influencing federal officials, stalking, and presidential assassination, kidnapping, and assault. These enhancements apply if the offense was committed knowingly at the direction or coordination of a foreign government or its agent, aiming to deter foreign involvement in criminal activity within the United States.
