Bill overview
The Rural Hospital Closure Relief Act of 2025 aims to help rural hospitals stay open by temporarily expanding the criteria for designating them as ‘critical access hospitals’ (CAHs) that receive special Medicare payments. Currently, hospitals must be far from other facilities or certified before 2006. This bill allows hospitals serving underserved populations, experiencing financial losses, and with a plan for financial stability to qualify, even if they’re closer to other hospitals. The bill also directs agencies to study the impact of this change and recommend payment models for rural hospitals.
