Bill overview
The PROTECT Act of 2025 aims to enhance tribal justice and public safety by expanding the authority of Tribal courts. Specifically, it allows Tribal courts to prosecute certain crimes, including drug trafficking and firearms offenses, even if the defendant or victim isn't an enrolled tribal member. The bill also strengthens Tribal courts’ ability to obtain electronic communications data through warrants, aligning their procedures with federal standards. Furthermore, it establishes a program for incarcerating Tribal court convicted offenders through the Bureau of Prisons Tribal Prisoner Program.
