Bill overview
The SAFER Transport Act aims to combat freight fraud and theft within the trucking industry by establishing a Freight Fraud and Theft Advisory Committee to advise the Department of Transportation on strategies for reducing these issues. It also mandates a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Transportation and the Department of Justice to coordinate efforts, phases out the existing MC number registration system in favor of USDOT numbers, and strengthens state licensing requirements to ensure drivers are legally authorized to operate commercial vehicles. Finally, it creates a system for flagging suspicious activity in the registration system and outlines penalties for fraudulent behavior.
