Bill overview
This bill aims to provide pet owners with compensation for the emotional distress and suffering they experience when their cat or dog dies due to a veterinarian’s malpractice or negligence. If a veterinarian, veterinary hospital, or facility is found responsible for a pet’s death, the owner can, in addition to recovering the pet’s value and veterinary expenses, receive a minimum award of $5,000 to cover the pain and suffering caused by the loss. The bill seeks to ensure that pet owners have recourse for these significant losses. It will be effective immediately upon passage.
