Overview
This bill requires manufacturers of new vehicles sold in New Jersey to stamp the vehicle identification number onto each catalytic converter installed in the vehicle. The goal is to deter catalytic converter theft, which has significantly increased in recent years, leading to a surge in insurance claims. By making it easier to track and identify stolen converters, the state hopes to reduce the number of thefts. The law will take effect three months after it is enacted.
