Overview
This bill modifies New Jersey’s laws regarding the justifiable use of deadly force. It removes the justification for using deadly force to make or assist in making an arrest, except when there is an imminent threat of deadly force to the actor or a third party. The bill also clarifies that correctional officers can use force to prevent escapes under specific circumstances, but not deadly force unless there’s an imminent threat. It further addresses the use of force to prevent suicide or the commission of certain crimes, limiting the use of deadly force in those situations.
