Overview
This bill requires the New Jersey Pretrial Services Program to recommend pretrial detention for certain repeat offenders charged with violent crimes. Specifically, it expands the criteria for detention to include defendants convicted of two or more offenses involving specific violent crimes, crimes subject to life imprisonment, or crimes outlined in the No Early Release Act. The program’s recommendation of ‘no release’ can serve as evidence in determining whether a defendant should be held in jail pending trial. The goal is to increase the likelihood of detaining repeat offenders who pose a significant risk to public safety.
