Overview
This bill increases the penalty for assault on law enforcement officers in New Jersey. Currently, assault on a law enforcement officer is a third-degree crime if the victim suffers bodily injury, and a fourth-degree crime otherwise. This bill raises the offense to a second-degree crime if bodily injury occurs, and maintains the fourth-degree classification if no injury results. The bill also expands the definition of who can be targeted, including firefighters, emergency medical personnel, school employees, corrections officers, and utility workers, when assaulted under specific circumstances.
