Bill overview
This bill makes it a crime of the fourth degree in New Jersey to knowingly and actively participate in a criminal street gang and to intentionally assist others in committing certain offenses, such as robbery, assault, and arson. It defines ‘criminal street gang’ using the existing legal definition from 2007. Individuals are considered part of a gang if they meet specific criteria, including self-proclamation or other indicators of gang activity, and have committed related crimes within the past five years.
