Bill overview
This bill would allow the Governor of New Jersey to issue an executive order temporarily preventing residential evictions and removals due to foreclosure during a federal government shutdown. It defines ‘eligible residents’ as furloughed federal employees or recipients of SNAP benefits. While eviction proceedings can continue, enforcement of removal orders would be suspended unless required by court order or if the eviction isn't related to rent non-payment. Sheriffs and court officials would be directed to refrain from carrying out removals during the executive order’s duration.
