Overview
This bill would authorize the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to provide site approval for the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) and to allow operators of these reactors to store spent nuclear fuel on-site. The BPU’s approval would supersede local ordinances, and the bill requires the BPU to develop an incentive program to encourage SMR construction. It also defines ‘small modular reactor’ and establishes a timeframe for storage authorization until a national repository is established.
