Overview
This bill changes the legal definition of motor vehicle theft in New Jersey. It lowers the monetary threshold for a motor vehicle theft to be considered a second-degree crime. Currently, thefts of vehicles valued at under $25,000 are classified as third-degree crimes, while vehicles valued at $25,000 or more are classified as second-degree crimes. This means that penalties for motor vehicle theft could increase for more valuable vehicles.
