Overview
This bill provides protections for renters and leaseholders who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Landlords cannot terminate a tenancy, refuse to renew a lease, or enter into a rental agreement based on a tenant’s or applicant’s status as a victim of these crimes, provided the tenant offers specific documentation such as a restraining order, law enforcement record, or certification from a domestic violence specialist. Landlords violating this bill may be liable for damages, and tenants can use this as a defense against eviction proceedings. The bill also clarifies existing eviction procedures to ensure victims are not unfairly removed from their homes.
