Overview
This bill creates a new crime in New Jersey for impersonating a first responder – including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel – with the intention of committing a crime. If the underlying offense is a disorderly persons or petty disorderly persons offense, the impersonating crime will be a fourth-degree crime. Otherwise, the impersonating crime will be one degree higher than the most serious underlying crime, up to a first-degree offense if the underlying crime is already a first degree. This legislation aims to address potential exploitation during emergencies like wildfires or droughts.
