This bill increases the penalties for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident when it results in the death of another person. Currently, it’s a crime of the second degree, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $150,000 fine. This legislation elevates the offense to a crime of the first degree, carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $200,000 fine. The bill also clarifies that knowledge of the death or the violation is not required to prove the offense.
