Establishes bribery in official and political matters applies to person soliciting, accepting, or agreeing to accept benefit as consideration to act even though not yet in office or otherwise qualified to act.

This bill expands the definition of bribery in New Jersey to include situations where someone is offered, accepts, or agrees to accept a benefit with the intent to influence a public official or voter, even if they haven't yet taken office or are otherwise unqualified to act. It clarifies that ‘benefit’ includes anything not authorized by law and broadens the definition of ‘public servant’ to include candidates for office. The bill also includes provisions to prevent the defense that an individual was not qualified to act.
