Bill overview
This bill amends New Jersey law to include creating a false public alarm as a form of bias intimidation. It expands the definition of bias intimidation to encompass actions intended to intimidate individuals or groups based on protected characteristics, such as race, religion, or sexual orientation. The severity of the crime will depend on the underlying offense, ranging from a fourth-degree crime to a first-degree crime with potential prison sentences of up to 30 years. The bill also removes a previous section of the law that was deemed unconstitutional.
