Bill overview
This bill changes how costs are paid for individuals filing postconviction petitions for habeas corpus in Nevada. Currently, these costs are covered by money appropriated to the Office of State Public Defender. The bill redirects this funding to the Department of Indigent Defense Services, with a backup plan to utilize the Reserve for Statutory Contingency Account if the Department’s funds are exhausted. It also extends this change to the payment of compensation and expenses for attorneys representing indigent defendants or petitioners.
