Overview
This bill increases the accidental death benefit for certain members of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) who are firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, hazardous materials emergency first responders, or fire instructors. Specifically, it raises the pension for surviving spouses to 70% of their last year’s compensation, or $50,000, and increases benefits for any surviving children. The bill also provides an additional lump-sum payment to a designated beneficiary and covers employer-sponsored health insurance premiums for surviving spouses and children.
