Overview
This bill increases the accidental death benefit for surviving spouses or children of certain members and retirees in the New Jersey Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS). It also provides an accidental death benefit to beneficiaries of these members and retirees. The bill redefines ‘child’ to include individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities who are unable to work and have been so determined by a medical board, and expands the definition to include those enrolled in higher education. It also clarifies definitions related to ‘widower’ and ‘parent’ for eligibility purposes.
