Overview
This bill requires New Jersey’s long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and assisted living residences, to regularly check in with residents to ensure their proxy directives are up-to-date. A proxy directive is a document that designates someone to make healthcare decisions on a resident’s behalf if they are unable to do so themselves. The bill clarifies that having a proxy directive is voluntary and doesn’t mandate residents to create one. Facilities must meet with each resident at least once a year to review these directives.
