Bill overview
This bill would allow for the possibility of parole for certain inmates currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole in South Dakota. Specifically, inmates sentenced to life imprisonment for offenses committed between the ages of eighteen and twenty-seven are eligible for discretionary parole consideration after serving twenty-five years. The Board of Pardons and Paroles would consider factors such as the inmate’s age at the time of the offense, rehabilitation efforts, and victim impact when making parole decisions, and subsequent hearings would occur no more than two years apart.
