Bill overview
This bill, the Improving Retirement Security for Family Caregivers Act of 2026, allows certain family caregivers to contribute to a Roth IRA. It defines a ‘qualified family caregiver’ as an unpaid family member, foster parent, or other adult providing in-home care for a child or adult with special needs, who has worked fewer than 500 hours during the year. If meeting the criteria, these caregivers can contribute up to the amount allowed under section 219 of the Internal Revenue Code, and the bill includes a coordination provision with spousal IRAs. The changes will take effect starting in 2026.
