Bill overview
This bill proposes to increase the amount of the West Virginia homestead exemption. Currently, homeowners age 65 or older, or those permanently and totally disabled, can exempt the first $20,000 of their property’s assessed value from property taxes. The bill would increase this exemption to $30,000 in 2026, $35,000 in 2028, and $40,000 in 2030. It also includes provisions to address residency requirements for those returning to West Virginia after living elsewhere and those who are active military personnel.
