Bill overview
This bill proposes to make assaulting police officers and police dogs a felony offense in West Virginia. It expands the definition of ‘law-enforcement officer’ to include those working with police dogs. Individuals who maliciously cause bodily injury to these officers or dogs, or who attempt to do so with intent to harm, could face a prison sentence of three to fifteen years. Unlawful assaults, defined as causing injury without malice, would carry a potential sentence of two to five years. The bill also increases penalties for repeat offenses.
