Bill overview
This bill would have allowed Massachusetts cities and towns to increase the local sales tax on restaurant meals, but it failed to pass. Currently, the state sales tax of 6.25% is applied to restaurant purchases. This legislation would have given local governments the authority to add an additional percentage to this tax, with approval from the local community. The revenue generated would have been allocated to the city or town where the tax was collected.
