Bill overview
This bill updates the Superfund law to specifically consider the impacts of climate change when assessing and addressing hazardous waste sites. It requires the EPA to account for projected increases in natural disasters and extreme weather events, such as floods and hurricanes, when determining how to clean up contaminated sites. The bill aims to ensure that Superfund remedies remain effective in the face of a changing climate and potential worsening environmental hazards. This will help protect communities from the combined risks of pollution and climate-related disasters.
Key provisions
- Requires the EPA to consider climate change projections in Superfund assessments.
- Mandates an assessment of how climate change may exacerbate existing natural disasters and hazards.
- Updates the Superfund review process to account for potential future impacts of climate change.
- Specifically addresses the potential threat to human health and the environment from climate-related disasters.
Who is affected
- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
- Communities near Superfund sites
- Hazardous waste site cleanup projects
- Federal taxpayers (through Superfund funding)
Notable changes
- Adds a requirement for climate change considerations to existing Superfund review processes.
- Introduces a new element to the EPA’s review of remedial actions – assessing their long-term effectiveness in a changing climate.
