Bill overview
The Legacy IT Reduction Act of 2026 aims to reduce the amount of money and effort the federal government spends on outdated computer systems. It requires agencies to create a detailed inventory of these ‘legacy’ systems, develop plans to modernize or replace them, and be transparent about their use and costs. The act also directs the Office of Management and Budget to provide guidance on how to identify and manage legacy IT, and establishes a review by the Comptroller General to assess the Act’s effectiveness and integration with other modernization efforts.
