Overview
This bill prohibits health insurance carriers in New Jersey from denying coverage of nonopioid prescription drugs in favor of opioid prescription drugs when a licensed healthcare provider prescribes a nonopioid medication for acute pain. It requires carriers to ensure nonopioid drugs approved by the FDA are not disadvantaged in coverage or cost-sharing compared to opioids. The bill also applies to contracts purchased by the State Health Benefits Commission and the School Employees’ Health Benefits Commission, and to the Medicaid program, ensuring nonopioid medications are not required to be tried before being approved.
