Bill overview
This bill, the Preserve Our Lakes and Keep Our Environment Safe Act, directs the Department of Transportation to study the potential risks to the Great Lakes from oil or hazardous liquid spills originating from pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac. The study will assess the economic and environmental impacts of such spills and evaluate the condition and structural integrity of the pipelines themselves. If the study determines a facility poses an unacceptable risk, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration can order its termination.
