Bill overview
The Automatic Listening Exploitation Act of 2019 aims to protect consumers’ privacy by limiting how smart speakers and video doorbells record and use audio and video. It prohibits these devices from storing recordings unless specifically activated by the user and requires clear notice and consent for any further use or sharing of those recordings. The Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general are given the authority to enforce these rules and penalize violations.
