Bill overview
This bill aims to protect native fish populations by requiring federal agencies to evaluate the potential impact of invasive species when designing and building fishways. Fishways are structures built to help fish migrate, but if not carefully planned, they can inadvertently introduce or promote the spread of invasive species. The bill directs the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of the Interior to factor in this risk during the planning process for new fishways. It seeks to ensure that fishway construction doesn’t negatively affect the health of aquatic ecosystems.
