Bill overview
The LOVE Act of 2020 seeks to address the historical injustices of the Lavender Scare, a period in the 1950s and 60s when the State Department allegedly fired or discouraged the hiring of employees based on their perceived homosexuality. The bill directs the State Department to review past terminations, offer apologies and record corrections to affected individuals, establish a Reconciliation Board to provide redress, and improve policies to prevent future discrimination. It also calls for a congressional apology and the creation of a permanent exhibit at the National Museum of American Diplomacy documenting this history.
