Bill overview
The Protect Peaceful Protests Act aims to limit the federal government’s ability to deploy law enforcement during protests. It restricts the Department of Justice from using DEA officers for duties unrelated to drug investigations and prevents the U.S. Marshals Service from deputizing local law enforcement without a request from a state, tribal government, or the District of Columbia. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security’s authority to deploy personnel to protect federal property during protests is also limited to requests from local leaders. This legislation seeks to ensure local authorities have greater control over law enforcement responses to protests.
